What to Do in Different Lockout Situations

If you find yourself searching Google in the middle of the night for something like, “how to deal with a lockout fast” or “how to get back inside – I’m locked out” then you are likely very stressed out. Lockouts are not fun, but they do happen to the best of us, no matter how organized you might be. But don’t panic if you are currently locked out of your property. Yes, we know it’s easier said than done, but there are ways to handle a lockout situation that will help you avoid damaging your property and will perhaps allow you to get back in even faster.

We serve customers in Barberton, OH but you can still benefit from the information we are about to go over no matter where you are. You might be here as a preventative measure, or you might already be unable to get inside. You could be locked out of your office, your vehicle or your home. Check out what to do in this situation.

There are steps you should take regardless of the lockout situation. Here are some tips for you…

Try your best to remain calm. Any time one is in a stressful situation, it can be very easy to panic. But this isn’t going to resolve anything. It’s only going to make the situation worse. If you are upset or nervous because you are in a place that you don’t feel comfortable, for instance, you are locked out of your car in a dark parking lot, consider going back inside wherever you came from, whether it is your office, a shopping mall, a restaurant, and so on. Even if the place has closed, if a manager is still inside, they very well might let you in just so you can wait for help to arrive. You also have the option of calling the police and having them come to wait with you, if you don’t have a friend or family member you can call. Again, try not to panic. And don’t break glass in an attempt to get into your property and try to go through a window. You just might get hurt. Try to remember if anyone has a spare key. It’s easy to become forgetful when we are stressed!

Contact your leasing office. If you live in a place such as an apartment or condo and get locked out because your key is nowhere to be found, you just might be in luck in terms of getting back inside fast and without having to call a locksmith. This is because you might have a landlord or manager of your complex that is able to get you back inside because they have a spare key. Maybe your leasing office or front desk is not open, but there is a maintenance team available that can get you inside. Check what is available to you.

Try a back door. Try a back door! This notion applies if you are locked out of your home, car, or elsewhere. When we panic, we tend to become forgetful, so you might not have even realized that your rear door was unlocked. It’s worth checking prior to calling a locksmith, at least.

When you need to, contact a locksmith! Do you have a locksmith that you have used before? Or perhaps there is one in your area that you have heard excellent feedback about.  A 24/7 locksmith in your location is a great option if you have exhausted all other options of getting inside. Best of all, it should be reasonably priced to get back in.

Prevent a lockout with these steps/Be prepared for a lockout

Create a copy of your key. If you have locked yourself out of your property, obviously you don’t want it to ever happen again. One way to prevent a lockout from occurring again is by having a copy of your key made. Your car likely came with two keys anyway, but have another one made for your home or office. Give a copy to someone you trust. It’s always a safe bet!

Have something you say to yourself to prevent a lockout. If you are prone to losing your keys maybe get used to saying something to yourself, such as “check for your keys!” This might help you prevent a lockout in the future.

Keep your identification on you. If you have been locked out of your house, or your car or office, you might have been asked to show ID for various reasons if you called a locksmith for assistance. This is for your own protection, and if you carry a purse or bag, it’s easy to throw a copy of your ID in there.

Have the phone number of a locksmith saved in your phone. If you have been locked out in the past, you know the last thing you want to do during the lockout is have to look all over the place for a locksmith. You don’t want to have to do research late at night. Have the number of a locksmith in your phone, ready to go. This way, you are prepared and know exactly who to call. Call them and ask in advance if they offer 24/7 help. If they don’t, someone else will.

Go keyless. Keyless entry systems can prevent lockouts, because you don’t have to keep track of a key if you have one. A local locksmith will be able to set up a keyless system for you. Not to mention, they will be able to help you choose the best one. There are quite a few options at your disposal, and what you choose will depend on your budget and needs. Ask them for advice.

Getting locked out is stressful but try not to panic. Hopefully, you will find that the guidance that has been offered is helpful. Remember that you always have options and don’t need to damage your property. Just call a locksmith and remember our advice on what to do in different lockout situations!
